Pirtis Etiquette

Understanding and respecting pirtis customs enhances your experience and shows appreciation for this ancient tradition. Here's what every visitor should know.

The Golden Rules

1

Respect the Space

Pirtis is a place of quietude and renewal. Keep voices low and phones away.

2

Trust Your Guide

The pirtininkas knows the traditions. Follow their guidance during rituals.

3

Listen to Your Body

Leave when you need to. There's no competition — only personal wellness.

Do

  • Shower thoroughly before entering the sauna
  • Sit or lie on a towel (never bare skin on wood)
  • Hydrate between rounds with water or herbal tea
  • Thank the pirtininkas for their service
  • Take breaks in the cooling area
  • Move slowly and mindfully
  • Ask questions — curiosity is welcome
  • Tip your pirtininkas if service was exceptional

Don't

  • Enter the sauna under the influence of alcohol
  • Use strong perfumes, lotions, or oils
  • Talk loudly or engage in boisterous behavior
  • Stare at others — respect privacy
  • Rush the pirtininkas or other guests
  • Pour excessive water on stones without asking
  • Leave without cooling down properly
  • Bring electronic devices into the sauna

A Note on Nudity

Traditional Lithuanian pirtis is conducted nude. This isn't about exhibitionism — it's practical (fabric interferes with heat and whisking) and equalizing (everyone is the same in the pirtis).

If this is outside your comfort zone, many pirtis offer options:

  • Private sessions for individuals or couples
  • Gender-separated sessions
  • Swimwear-allowed times (less traditional)

Communicate your preferences when booking. A good pirtis will accommodate while explaining the traditional context.

During the Whisking Ritual

Vanojimas (whisking) is the heart of the pirtis experience. Here's how to receive it properly:

  1. 1

Lie on your stomach first, arms relaxed at your sides or under your head.

    The pirtininkas will guide positioning.

  2. 2

Breathe deeply and relax your muscles completely.

    Tension reduces the benefits.

  3. 3

Communicate if something is too hot, too hard, or uncomfortable.

A simple "softer please" is enough.

  4. 4

Turn when instructed to receive whisking on your front.

    Trust the process.

  5. 5

After whisking, rest before moving or standing.

    Your circulation is heightened.

Useful Lithuanian Phrases

While most pirtininkai speak English, these phrases show respect for the culture:

Ačiū (ah-CHOO)
Thank you
Labai gerai (LAH-bay geh-RAI)
Very good
Švelniau, prašau (SHVEL-nyow, pra-SHOW)
Softer, please
Per karšta (pair KAR-shta)
Too hot
Puiku (POO-ee-koo)
Excellent
Į sveikatą! (ee svei-KAH-tah)
To health! (cheers)
